Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Softgel Capsules that come under the brand name “FEGEN-XT” and belongs to a class of medications called ‘haematinics’ primarily used to treat anaemia (lack of blood) that occurs mainly due to poor diet, poor absorption of food, or increased folate use in the body (in pregnancy). Anaemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells for carrying adequate oxygen required to various body tissues.
Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Softgel Capsules are a combination of two drugs: Ferrous ascorbate (iron supplement) and folic acid (a form of vitamin B9). It works by increasing red blood cells (RBC) and haemoglobin (a protein) production in the body. As a result, an adequate number of RBCs is produced in the body, so that body’s each tissue gets a sufficient supply of oxygen.
You are not recommended to take it with coffee, tea or dairy products at the same time as they may reduce the absorption of this medicine. However, you may drink coffee or tea 2 hours before or after taking it.
You are not recommended to take it with phenytoin as co-administration of these two medicines may reduce the concentration of this capsule in the blood and increase the risk of seizures (fits). However, please consult a doctor before taking this medicine with phenytoin.
Is this medicine safe for hemochromatosis patients?
It is not recommended for hemochromatosis (excessive iron in the body) patients as it may increase the risk of adverse effects. Therefore, it is advised to inform your doctor if you have any iron overload conditions before taking it.
